Liner Notes
It is said that the point of art is to provoke an emotional response in the observer. I don’t know whether this album qualifies as art, but I hope it gives you a favorable emotional response just the same. I certainly poured every bit of my heart into making it.

Falling was composed in a single day in February 2010 based on a melody (the first thirteen notes) heard in a dream. Watch for another version on my next album, Music and Lyrics.

Cafe Caprica and Ambrosia and A Six were inspired by a television show; and if you are as big a geek as I am, you know which one I mean. The very first time I heard Bach’s Air on the G String I have wanted to do a bass-buzzing light jazz version of it, and Bach to Bassics is the sound I have been aiming for all these years.

I composed The Last Goodnight upon the occasion of my father’s passing.

Though it’s a little loud in places, Being Held was originally composed as a lullaby for a friend’s infant niece back in about 1986. Until I met her, babies were just noisy, smelly nuisances. She was the first “cool” baby I met, and the one that made me want to have one of my own. Karlee Ann are you reading this?

The Four Walls version of Fur Elise is special. They say when Beethoven wrote this piece, he was deeply in love. So rather than perform the piece straight the way it’s written, and the way we have heard countless keyboard students play it, I tried to imagine what Beethoven was imagining when he performed it for his Elise, if that was even her name. It’s called the “Four Walls Version” because it’s about a man and a woman and the four walls around them, but it might as well have been called the “Covered with Kisses Version.”

Wedding Dance was composed for my friends’ wedding in 1988. Maybe if I had made it sound this good at their ceremony they’d still be married!

The balance of the tracks on this album were composed for reasons which have escaped me over the years.

All songs (c) 2010 Patrick Bishop
All songs performed on the Casio WK200 Keyboard, recorded and mixed using Audacity.
Tracks 6-8 (The Warm Fuzz Set) recorded live at Cafe One Two Trio.
Tracks 9 – 16 (The Soft and Suite) recorded live at the Villa of the Whispers.

A Glass and a Cigarette

Directed by Niazi Mostafa and based on a story by Abdel Aziz Salam, A Glass And A Cigarette is a captivating classic from the golden age of Egyptian cinema. The film features several of the era’s brightest stars, including the illustrious Samia Gamal as Hoda, a famous dancer who gives up the spotlight to marry and start a family with Mamdouh, a handsome young doctor who is just beginning his career. When Mamdouh’s scheming Italian head nurse Yolanda (played with gusto by the radiant Dalida) sets her sights on Mamdouh, Hoda’s jealousy drives her to drink, ultimately endangering everything she holds dear. Featuring several dynamic Samia Gamal dance sequences and wonderful songs performed by Kouka and Dalida to help lighten the mood, A Glass And A Cigarette is an enchanting example of Egyptian melodrama at its finest.

Arab Culture, Vol. 1: An In-depth Look at Arab Culture Through Cartoons and Popular Art (English and Arabic Edition)

In Arab Culture, you will discover a new and illuminating perspective on the Arabic world and its culture. It uses cartoons from Arabic media as windows on the vibrant day-to-day life of Arab countries, showing Arab attitudes, behavior, and mores as they are expressed locally. By presenting the cartoons and then explaining their context, not only does this book teach the essential but all-too-easily overlooked details of culture, but it invites readers to analyze their own assumptions and interpretations, provoking a dynamic engagement with Arabic culture. As the cartoons are fully translated and the discussions are in English, those who are unfamiliar with or just beginning their study of Arabic will be able to engage fully with the cultural lessons. However, the book has additional benefits for advanced Arabic students, as it presents a range of national dialects and idiomatic slang forms that will be unfamiliar to those who know only “classroom” Arabic.

Honorable Mention at the Columbus Film & Video Festival

Produced by the Palestinian Housing Rights Movement, Jerusalem: An Occupation Set In Stone? is a tribute to the thousands of Palestinians living in East Jerusalem without access to lifeâ??s most basic amenities. Filmmaker, Marty Rosenbluth, details the devastating effects of Israelâ??s urban planning policies that, according to many, aim to uproot the Palestinian presence in the Holy City. Due to itâ??s fairness and clarity Jerusalem: An Occupation Set In Stone? was awarded an Honorable Mention for the Lindheim Award in the Third Annual Jewish Video Competition — an award that honors programs that best explore the political and social relationships between Jews and other ethnic or religious groups.
